WROCK FOR FREEDOM FESTIVAL 2019
Wrocław's final holiday weekend is traditionally reserved for “wROCK for Freedom – Legendy Rocka” concerts at Centrum Historii Zajezdnia, the former bus depot on ul. Grabiszyńska. It is a place close to Wrocław residents' hearts, where Lower Silesia's Solidarity movement was born in August 1980.
31 AUGUST 2019
The legendary British band SWEET will headline this year's wROCK for Freedom festival! Sweet have been on stage for over half a century and still prove themselves one of the best live bands in rock history. Joining them in Wrocław on 31 August will be DŻEM, celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, and favourites of younger audiences, NOCNY KOCHANEK and JELONEK.
Plan to end the summer holidays in Wrocław!
Sweet formed in the late 1960s, initially concentrating on finding a recognisable sound of their own. After a brief flirtation with pop, the Englishmen chose distinctly heavier sounds, placing themselves at the forefront of the glam-rock revolution. With support from producer Phil Wainman and songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, they recorded their first major international hit, “FunnyFunny”, in 1971. This was also when the classic line-up formed: singer Brian Connolly, bassist Steve Priest, guitarist Andy Scott and drummer Mick Tucker.
In November 1971, The Sweet released their debut album, “Funny How Sweet Co-Co Can Be”. Less than two years later, “Block Buster!” took them to the very top. The song reached number one not only in England but in most European countries.
The Sweet reached the top and had no intention of leaving quickly. Singles including “Hellraiser”, “BallroomBlitz”, “TeenageRampage”, “The SixTeens” and “Turn It Down”, alongside the acclaimed albums “SweetFanny Adams” and “DesolationBoulevard”, brought the band fame and glory, while superb live performances made them glam-rock icons. Yet enormous success did not protect the group from difficulties and eventual dissolution. In the late 1970s, The Sweet could still shake up the charts: “Love Is Like Oxygen” reached the Top Ten in both England and the United States. However, the singer’s worsening alcoholism led to his departure in 1979, signalling the beginning of the end for the classic The Sweet.
From the mid-1980s, the musicians focused on their own projects, continuing the band's activity. In Wrocław, the line-up will be Pete Lincoln (vocals, bass), Bruce Bisland (vocals, drums), Tony O’Hora (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Andy Scott (vocals, guitar).
The Sweet sold more than 50 million records and enormously influenced metal bands emerging in the 1980s, particularly Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe. Widely regarded as the genre’s godfathers, their unique style, based on joyful pop melodies, fast solos, powerful vocals and harmonies, can be heard in many contemporary rock recordings. Live performance has always been their true element, as audiences will discover in Wrocław on 31 August. Despite the passing years, the Englishmen still take the stage to kick some serious backside.
