KAMP! and “Orneta”: the band’s second studio release and a fresh musical perspective
KAMP! returned with a new album released overnight in late October 2015. It was probably the first time in Poland that an album appeared just hours after its official announcement. The record did not sit in a drawer waiting for the so-called right moment or a marketing strategy to be prepared. It gave the band no opportunity to make changes and, at the same time, treated every listener equally. No one had privileged access to their first encounter with “Orneta”.

There is little point writing that KAMP!'s second studio album, “Orneta”, was awaited. Every follow-up to a debut, especially a successful one, has “anticipation” and “comparison” in its genes. No band has escaped this.
It is not as though KAMP! have remained silent since releasing their first album in 2012. They recorded the “Baltimore” EP for American label Cascine, released the single “A New Leaf”, made remixes and toured intensively.
They worked on the second album from early 2015. Studio activity was preceded by a deliberate break from social media, interviews and touring. The only obstacles to their studio plans were running their Brennnessel label, playing NBA2k15 and daily basketball games in the car park outside the studio.
“Orneta” is a surprising, uncompromising album that deserves discussion. Both listeners and journalists have noted that it is considerably more demanding than the debut. “We live in three different cities, but KAMP!’s music is only made in Łódź, when we are together. I think those distances between cities can be felt in our music, just as the place where it is made can,” says KAMP! frontman Tomek Szpaderski.
“We wanted to shift the centre of gravity in our music. To change our focus from far away to close at hand. Rather than flaunting tropical sounds as on the debut, we wanted to draw the maximum exoticism from what is right under our noses,” they say.
It seems to have worked. “Orneta” remains high in sales and streaming charts, successive singles can be heard on radio stations including Radio Three, and several thousand people in total applauded KAMP!'s new incarnation during the first part of a tour covering almost 20 cities.
