Guitar World Record Online 2020: Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe” played from participants’ homes

Guitar World Record Online 2020 was announced as a shared performance of “Hey Joe” from homes, balconies and gardens. In place of gathering in Wrocław’s Market Square, the project proposed connecting participants online, with room for other string instruments too.

For the first time in its history, this year's Guitar World Record will take place entirely online. These are exceptional circumstances. We cannot meet in Wrocław's Market Square, but we can play together on the internet!

On 1 May, we will try to create the World's Largest Guitar Orchestra together, with the potential to reach around the entire globe! We will play at home: on balconies, in gardens, beside open windows or in armchairs in front of computer screens, wherever you feel most comfortable!

During this year's Record, we will exchange the UniVibe sign (Uniting Vibration of Music), representing music's unifying power. UniVibe is a new idea: a sign of unity and a greeting gesture that can replace a handshake during the epidemic.

The broadcast from Wrocław will be available at www.heyjoe.pl, on our Facebook and YouTube profiles, and on the channels of media patrons and partners joining the collective guitar initiative. We will ask guitarists to take a photo of themselves with their guitar or make a short video, and post it on the Record event’s Facebook profile and Instagram. We will use the best videos in a clip from the Guitar World Record 2020 attempt.

Alongside the main song, Jimi Hendrix's “Hey Joe”, this year we will play Budka Suflera's “Jest taki samotny dom”, among other tracks, in tribute to the recently deceased Romuald Lipko. Instructions for playing can be found at www.heyjoe.pl under “Zagraj z nami”.
As every year, the orchestra will be led by Leszek Cichoński.

HOW TO JOIN THE RECORD ATTEMPT?

To play in the Guitar World Record Online, you only need a guitar and the five basic chords C/G/D/A/E required for Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe”.

All types of guitar are welcome: acoustic, classical, electric and bass, along with other string instruments such as ukulele, mandolin, banjo and balalaika.
You do not have to be an adult to join us.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR ENTRY

On 1 May, email your registration to gramy@heyjoe.pl.
Put “Gramy!” in the subject line and include your first name, surname and home town in the message. Attach a completed registration form, available here: https://heyjoe.pl/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/karta_uczestnictwa2020.doc.
Several registrations may be sent in one email.

PLEASE NOTE: do not send your entries before 1 May. We need to know that you are playing with us on the day of the event!

If you can, take a photo with your guitar or record a short video on 1 May and post it on the event’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/333404514149711/ and on Instagram with #GitarowyRekord

Create your own Facebook broadcast from wherever you are playing, and let your friends know beforehand to reach as many people as possible — an audience always matters to an artist!

LET’S RESPECT OUR NEIGHBOURS!

Electric guitars will only be played during the group rehearsals at 14.00 and 15.00, and during the record attempt from 15.50 to 16.20.

While rehearsing, tell your neighbours and passers-by about the guitar event. Invite them to cheer us on at 16.00, in person if possible or online.

RECORD-HOLDER’S CERTIFICATE

In response to your entry, you will receive a Record Holder’s Certificate by email, which you can complete with your details and print.

The commemorative Record Holder Certificates familiar from previous editions can be collected until the end of 2020 at Stary Klasztor, ul. Purkyniego 1, Wrocław. To collect yours, show the email confirming your registration; you may ask friends to collect it on your behalf. Your first name, surname and home town will be included in the List of Participants in the Online Guitar World Record 2020.

In the Guinness Guitar Record's history, this year's event will be marked as a special online edition. Therefore, regardless of the result, next year we will still need 7,423 + 1 guitars playing together to break the record.

We will provide ongoing updates on the programme and the event’s organisation and schedule. Check the latest posts on the event page and the Record’s official website.

Let’s meet online on 1 May, and in Wrocław next year!
