THE NATIONAL WIND ORCHESTRA’S FIRST ALBUM – WINDRAP! ORCHESTRA
WINDRAP! Orchestra combines the National Wind Orchestra’s sound with original compositions and voices from Polish rap. Mariusz Dziubek’s project features artists including Liroy, Łona and Abradab, with LIONSTAGE responsible for the album’s executive production.
THE BRILLIANCE OF BRASS WITH EXPRESSION, RHYME, RHYTHM, BEATS, REBELLION AND THE HISTORY OF RAP
WINDRAP ORCHESTRA conductor Mariusz Dziubek invited leading hip-hop artists and producers to collaborate, creating a distinctive fusion of powerful, brass-based sounds and deeply rooted hip-hop rhythms.
There are no accidental guests on WINDRAP! ORCHESTRA: Liroy, Vienio, Łona, Abradab, Kleszcz, Rahim and Kasta are living legends of the scene, while Grubson and Mesajah brought a dancehall revolution to it. The beats come from producers including Matheo, considered one of the best in the history of Polish rap. Other guests include folk act Dagadana, the band NO LOGO and Maria Sadowska.
Turning to symphonic sounds has sometimes been seen as a sign of artists struggling within the confines of their genre: fresh arrangements let them sell the same product again. There is no reheating of old material here, because the compositions are original, making “Windrap!Orchestra” a unique album. Crossing genres proved a natural process: musicians who might theoretically seem worlds apart played as though they had been born to share a stage. Narodowa Orkiestra Dęta and its conductor Mariusz Dziubek had already demonstrated their ability to play anything, from classical music and film favourites to pop, rock and reggae hits and religious songs. Collaborating with hip-hop legends, including Abradab, creator of the celebrated “Rap to nie zabawa już”, was an entirely new challenge.
“One evening, studying the score of a classical work for full wind instrumentation, I thought we could combine a wind orchestra with an entirely different musical style. Why not hip-hop, rap? That is how it began. I really wanted to show a wind orchestra in a symphonic light, elegant and concert-oriented, combined with hip-hop’s energy and street culture. I wanted to bring the strength, breath, power and brilliance of wind instruments together with rap’s expression, rhyme, rhythm, beat, rebellion and history,” says Mariusz Dziubek, summarising the album’s origins.
“I am very happy to be part of this project, especially as it includes so many people I know: Vienio, Abradab, Łona, a whole host of friends. I am expecting one killer track after another,” says Liroy. He makes no secret of needing no persuasion to play with Mariusz Dziubek, whose style and work ethic he greatly values. “I love wind instruments. It is a fantastic sound and such a modern approach. A brilliant idea. I hope this record will allow some people who, for example, listen only to electronic music or only to hip-hop to fall in love with a beautiful, full orchestral sound too,” adds Maria Sadowska.
“Windrap!Orchestra” will be available in shops and on streaming services from 22 April. Current information is available on the fan page https://www.facebook.com/NODLubin
