Ethno Jazz Festival invites you to another encounter with irresistible Balkan music! Appearing are the grand-prize winners of Guča’s legendary Balkan brass-band festival, Macedonia’s DŽAMBO AGUŠEVI ORCHESTRA! Džambo Agušev was born into a musical family in the small Macedonian town of Strumica in 1987. Interested in trumpet as a child, he later pursued it seriously. Every day, he insisted on accompanying his musician father to rehearsals, listening and watching local players attentively.

He dreamed of having his own trumpet, but his family refused, knowing how difficult a musician’s life could be. Eventually, seeing the boy’s dedication, his father gave him his first trumpet. From then on, Džambo was unstoppable, making it a point of honour to become the Balkans’ finest trumpeter and intending to succeed. While most boys his age in Strumica played football, Džambo played trumpet, constantly honing his skills until he joined his uncle’s orchestra at the astonishing age of 11.

The boy continued to develop. Despite his attachment to local music, Džambo kept his ears wide open, listening to and drawing inspiration from jazz, soul, funk, film music and Turkish music. In time, he developed a distinctive sound of his own.

When he grew up, he formed his own band and began building a reputation throughout the region, playing at weddings among other occasions. He was said to be the area’s finest wedding trumpeter, opening the door to brass-band competitions. In 2006, Džambo and his band entered the Trumpet Festival in Kumanovo. The result? First place. Džambo Agusevi Orchestra reached the podium every year until 2011, when they were “banned” from competing to give other bands a chance. Džambo’s orchestra then entered the festival in Pehchevo and won every prize. After that, the musician knew he was ready to compete with the finest Balkan orchestras at the legendary festival in Guca.

Since the 1960s, Guča has earned an international reputation as the world's most important battle of brass orchestras. In summer 2011, Džambo Aguševi Orchestra won first prize, writing their name into this famous event's history. Judges and audiences alike were enormously impressed.

After such achievements, Džambo could have rested on his laurels, earning a fortune playing weddings and commercial events, but that was not what he wanted to do. His aim became winning the hearts of audiences in Europe and beyond.

The next stop on the European concert tour will be Wrocław!
