world/ethnic/spiritual/medicine/mystic folk music

16 June 2024

Laboratorium Pieśni – Song Laboratory, spanning world, ethnic, spiritual, medicine and mystic folk music, is an all-female singing ensemble formed in 2013. They sing and arrange traditional polyphonic songs from Ukraine, Bulgaria, Belarus, Serbia, Albania, Bosnia, Poland, Georgia, Scandinavia, Occitania and many other places. They perform world songs both a cappella and with shamanic drums and ethnic instruments, including shruti box, bells, percussion, flute, kalimba, bowls and gong. They bring fresh arrangements and space for vocal improvisation inspired by nature, often intuitive, wild and feminine, to traditional songs.

The songs follow a particular journey from their source. Members usually bring them back from different regions of Poland, Europe and the world, then develop them through workshops and rehearsals, before they finally emerge in a new form, traditional or enriched and arranged.

The ensemble has participated in projects with acclaimed Polish musicians, including recordings of Łukasz L.U.C. Rostkowski’s music for the painted film “Chłopi”, Poland’s Oscar submission, which won a Fryderyk in 2024; recordings for the forthcoming Miuosh x Zespół “Śląsk” album “Pieśni Współczesne. Tom II”; “Czarna Polana” with Kayah and composer Atanas Valkov; L.U.C.’s “Good L.U.C.K” recordings and concerts; and “Wybraliśmy Wolność” and Sopot Birthday concerts under Andrzej Smolik’s artistic direction, alongside other Polish musicians.

Laboratorium Pieśni's albums received Fryderyk nominations in the “Album of the Year — World Music” category: “Rasti” in 2020 and “Hé oyáte” in 2024. The group won the TRYTON AWARD for Greatest Festival Personality at FAMA 2014. They also received City of Gdańsk scholarships in 2015 and 2018.

The group also creates productions in which traditional songs tell of disappearing rituals, including “Pory Roku” (2012) and “Puste Noce – Pieśni, które już się kończą” (2014).

The band have already visited 20 countries with concerts and workshops, including the USA, India, Switzerland, Japan, Spain, Israel, Iceland, Denmark, the Netherlands, France and the UK. Their video for Belarusian song “Sztoj pa moru” has exceeded 15 million views, and more than 155 thousand fans follow them on Facebook.

You can bring blankets, cushions or mats to make yourselves more comfortable!

Concert starts at 19:00; doors open at 18:00.
