Independent Dub Day: Aba Shanti-I, Adrian Sherwood and Little Roy bring dub to Wrocław
On 7 March 2009, we will witness an incredible musical event: the Independent Dub Day festival. The capital of Lower Silesia will shake with mighty bass. The rapidly growing popularity of bass sounds and the desire to meet fans' needs inspired the organisers to create this exceptional event. That night, Wrocław's Feature Film Studio will become a true dub sanctuary unlike anything Poland has seen before.

The festival will welcome outstanding artists from Poland and abroad, representing different strands of the genre. The sounds of UK dub pioneers will certainly have a strong presence, but there will also be room for acts exploring the music’s more psychedelic and contemporary aspects. For the first time in Poland, lovers of low frequencies will have a place to enjoy dub concerts throughout the night.

About the bands:
Aba Shanti-I (UK)
Aba Shanti-I is a pioneer of Black roots and dub music in Britain. He began his sound-system career in the eighties and owns Falasha Records, through which he has released his productions for years. His sets are full of unique vibrations, feeling and mysticism, and above all bass that penetrates the human body. A regular resident at University of Dub and other major UK dub events, he is one of the leading figures in British reggae and dub.
Adrian Sherwood & Little Roy (United Kingdom/Jamaica)
A mixing-desk master, master producer and living reggae/dub legend in one. He began in the 1970s as a teenager, soon mentored by Prince Far I himself. He owns now-cult On-U Sound, home to the roots of African Head Charge, Dub Syndicate and Little Axe. He has worked with countless stylistically diverse performers. At Independent Dub Day, roots-reggae legend Little Roy accompanies him.
Little Roy began his musical adventure during rocksteady’s early days, recording several singles at Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One. In 1969, he recorded his first major hit, “Bongo Nyah”, also considered the first song directly addressing Rastafari. He later recorded for Jamaica’s leading producers. In the 1990s, he strengthened his collaboration with Adrian Sherwood. Despite several career breaks, he continues recording and is now one of roots reggae’s greatest living legends. He has not visited Poland before.
Dubblestandart (Austria)
The project's roots reach back to the late 1980s. From the outset, the friends experimented with different sounds. They combined dub with rock and psychedelic elements, creating an original, explosive mixture. Working with numerous outstanding reggae figures, including Lee Perry, Mad Professor, Dillinger and Ken Boothe, further paved their way to success. On stage they are a veritable volcano of energy.
Brain Damage (France)
An active musical and production duo since the late nineties, Brain Damage are now among the leading acts on both the French and European dub scenes. They have released 4 full-length albums and one EP to date, collaborating with major figures in global dub, including Zion Train, The Disciples, Alpha & Omega and Jah Warrior. Their live sets showcase music filled with heavy psychedelic dub, industrial, ambient and drum-and-bass sounds.
Wszystkie Wschody Słońca (Poland)
The band formed in Słupsk in 1996. Never giving in to prevailing fashions, they developed their own distinctive style. Their combination of dub and electronic sounds has led their music to be called “reggae for the techno age”. They have supported major figures on the dub/reggae scene, including Mad Professor, Zion Train and Dub Syndicate, and worked with leading Polish musicians. WWS are currently preparing to release another album.
Skalpel In Dub (Poland)
Igor Pudlo, aka Igor Boxx, has been one half of Skalpel for almost ten years. Now he offers a new perspective on his group’s music, presenting Skalpel in dub versions: raw, energetic, highly spacious remixes of their tracks. These live-mixed reconstructions are inspired both by the genre’s classics, created by Jamaican shamans of the mixing desk, and by contemporary electronic experiments. Alongside remixes, there will be new material prepared especially for the occasion. Everything will be performed with a dance pulse and party vibration. Psychedelic visuals will emphasise the music’s far-out character. Independent Dub Day will host the world premiere of Skalpel’s dub remixes.
