XXANAXX and MINt at City Sounds: electronic sounds at Wrocław’s Stary Klasztor

XXANAXX and MINt represent two sides of Polish electronics: vocal songwriting and club-oriented exploration. Their shared City Sounds announcement at Stary Klasztor pairs new work by Klaudia Szafrańska and Michał Wasilewski with productions by Martyna Kubicz.

On 4 November, Wrocław’s Stary Klasztor will welcome XXANAXX as part of the City Sounds series. For three years, this much-loved electronic duo have fascinated audiences with their fantastic sound and the voice of one of Poland’s most intriguing singers, Klaudia Szafrańska. The concert will feature songs from their new album, due out this autumn. Before XXANAXX, outstanding producer MINt, one of this year’s discoveries on the Polish club scene, will perform.

Poland’s electronic scene develops at an astonishing pace, with ever-more-demanding fans. XXANAXX exceed those expectations and, despite a short history, are already icons. The Warsaw duo’s story began three years ago. Konin’s excellent singer Klaudia Szafrańska dreamed of performing since childhood, singing in a church choir, trying different bands and continually seeking a producer to help her develop artistically.

Meanwhile, Szczytno’s Michał Wasilewski, known as Lance Flare, a multi-instrumentalist, lyricist and composer, sought a singer to bring his productions into the world. They met in Warsaw and immediately decided to collaborate. “Disappear” appeared in December 2012, followed a year later by their U Know Me Records debut EP, named Debut of the Year by Brand New Anthem.

With “Broken Hope” and “Got U Under”, XXANAXX quickly began conquering clubs and winning audiences. Appearances at Poland’s biggest festivals, including Open’er, Audioriver and Selector, confirmed their exceptional position. Their debut, “Triangles”, one of 2014’s most anticipated records, appeared in May on major label Warner Music Polska and was warmly received by media and fans. XXANAXX in a large dose proved the perfect medicine, relaxing listeners and making them addicted to music of the highest international quality.

The starting point was analogue chillwave sounds underpinned by deep bass and a battery of effects, supported by beats from the legendary Roland TR 808 drum machine and complemented by Klaudia’s cosmic voice. Yet the duo’s imagination does not end there. A new album will appear soon and may prove a major surprise. One thing is certain: they continually develop and remain open to experiments and fresh musical experiences. The Stary Klasztor concert may surprise even loyal fans.

Before XXANAXX, MINt — Martyna Kubicz — will perform. This young producer has already made waves in Polish clubs and played Open’er, New Horizons International Film Festival and Wooded. Soon she will support Iceland's Gus Gus on their autumn Polish tour. Her music is an exciting blend of minimal, dance-oriented house and ambient textures; her inspirations include Aphex.
