Bajofondo Tango Club at WrocLove Fest: tango, electronics and Gustavo Santaolalla

Led by Gustavo Santaolalla, Bajofondo Tango Club takes tango into the worlds of electronics, rock and hip-hop. The WrocLove Fest 2014 preview introduced the Argentine-Uruguayan group and its return with a new album.

Their music is like football. Gotan Project play like Europeans, while Bajofondo play like Latin Americans!

Two-time Oscar winner for film music and Grammy winner Gustavo Santaolalla will perform in Wrocław with the world-renowned Bajofondo on 22 June. Their performance will be part of WrocLove Fest 2014, held within the Wrocław city celebrations.

The Grammy winners return with a new album, creating a unique mixture of tango, milonga, folk, rock, hip-hop, electronica, jazz and classical music, and above all the music of the Rio de la Plata region, where Argentine and Uruguayan influences meet.

Bajofondo is led by Gustavo Santaolalla, a two-time Oscar winner: in 2006 for “Brokeback Mountain” and in 2007 for “Babel”. He also has a Golden Globe for “A Love That Will Never Grow Old” from “Brokeback Mountain”, as well as BAFTA awards for the music to “The Motorcycle Diaries” and “Babel”.

“Bajofondo” literally means the underground. Tango was once “bajo fondo”, underground, but today largely inhabits official salons. Bajofondo Tango Club have returned it to where it always belonged: the underground of clubs and dance halls.

The project's beginnings reach back to 1997, when Latin rock pioneer and respected producer Santaolalla founded SURCO. Gustavo Santaolalla and Juan Campodónico had spent several years gathering the most visionary and talented musicians from Argentina and Uruguay.

The first album, simply titled “Bajofondo Tango Club”, was recorded in studios in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Los Angeles, Paris and New York. The scale of its success surprised everyone, including the artists themselves. Exceptionally strong sales, with Platinum certification in many countries on a scale usually reserved for commercial pop and rock releases, and major music industry awards led to the formation of the group’s live line-up.

The second album, “Bajofondo Tango Club: presents Supervielle”, was released in 2004, with pianist Luciano Supervielle taking centre stage. Like the debut, it received excellent reviews and broke sales records. It earned nominations at the MTV Video Musik Awards for Best Artist of the Year and at the prestigious BBC 3 Music Awards.

The next hit album, 2007’s “Mar Dulce”, consolidated Bajofondo’s position. Among its many guests was another Latin star, Nelly Furtado.

On their latest album, “Presente”, we hear an expanded Bajofondo sound. Eleven violinists, four viola players, three cellos and three double basses enrich the band. “We worked on orchestral parts,” Santaolalla explains. “We did something in the style of ‘Mar Dulce’, but ‘Presente’ is a much bigger project. We're trembling at the prospect of discovering the results,” he adds.

We will discover it live on 22 June in Wrocław at a new concert venue: Strefa Kultury Studenckiej, ul. Hoene-Wrońskiego 12, at Wrocław University of Science and Technology.
