XXX YEARS OF ILLUSION AT STARY KLASZTOR

Illusion was founded in Gdańsk in winter 1992 by Tomasz “Lipa” Lipnicki on vocals and guitar, Jurek “Jerry” Rutkowski on guitar and Paweł Herbasch on drums. The first bassist was former She member Ireneusz Mazurek, soon replaced by Jarek Śmigiel, formerly of IMTM. In the second half of 1992, the group played several concerts in Germany. In May 1993, they won the first Marlboro Rock-in competition; in August, they appeared at Jarocin and the Festival of Art in Żarnowiec. They then performed at Switzerland’s Gampel festival as one of their Marlboro Rock-in prizes, opening for Eric Burdon and The Animals.

28 OCTOBER 2022

Join us for a club concert celebrating ILLUSION’s 30th anniversary! On 28 October in Stary Klasztor’s Gothic Hall, we will hear the biggest hits and a selection spanning all of Illusion’s albums. It has already been 30 years since Illusion formed and played its first concert! To mark the occasion, the legendary band is heading out on tour. They will play the very best from their seven released albums. The iconic “Nóż”, “Vendetta”, “Wojtek” and “Cierń” are just some of the songs that have found a lasting place in fans’ minds and hearts. Expect a powerful dose of energy, uncompromising lyrics and Lipa’s charismatic voice. Mark your calendars – attendance is essential!

The band’s first album, simply titled “Illusion”, reached the shops in November 1993. Its sound drew on grunge, Pantera and Cypress Hill. Guest contributors included singer Grzegorz “Guzik” Guziński of Ndingue and Red Rooster, later Flapjack, and former Apteka guitarist Janek Sokołowski. A month after releasing the debut, Illusion took part in Wojna z trzema schodami in Gdańsk. In April 1994, they toured with Incrowd; in May, they opened for The Mission in Warsaw at the next Marlboro Rock-in final; and in August, they were among the stars of the Jarocin festival.

“Illusion 2” appeared a year after the first record. More carefully conceived and polished, it drew listeners into a world of massive sound, sharp, jagged riffs and Lipa’s aggressive vocals. Following this album, Lipnicki was nominated for a Fryderyk in the Best Vocalist category. In March and April 1995, the band played more than a dozen club concerts around Poland with Flapjack and Dynamind. These shows combined uncompromising music, exuberance and humour. During the same tour, Lipnicki and company also opened for Pro Pain at Warsaw’s Colosseum. The group additionally appeared at Pożegnanie Karnawału and Odjazdy at Katowice’s Spodek, taking the stage before Therapy? and X-Blocks at the latter event.
