THE 27TH WOŚP GRAND FINALE IN WROCŁAW
As every year, Wrocław's 27th WOŚP Finale will take over Lower Silesia's capital! 13 January will be full of joy and fun for a worthy cause: raising money to buy equipment for specialist children's hospitals.
11–13 JANUARY 2019
That day, thousands of volunteers will take to the streets of Polish cities and beyond to collect as much money as possible, seeking to beat previous years' records. It will not be easy: last year, generous donors gave the Orchestra more than 126 million złotych!
This year we will celebrate for three whole days. We begin on 11 January with a lively Balkan New Year's Eve celebration at Stary Klasztor. Atmospheric music will come from leading folk and Balkan acts including Tsigunz Fanfara Aventura, Balkan Folk Acustic, DJ Vara Pavlović and DJ Szoszana.
On 12 January, join us for an evening of sea shanties at Stara Piwnica, which has been playing as loudly as it can for the Orchestra for years. Brilliant shanty groups will take to the stage and make everyone feel like a true old sea dog! We will have the pleasure of hearing bands including Perły i Łotry, Za Horyzontem and Jan i Klan. Moor your boats at Stara Piwnica on Saturday evening: it will be an incredible night! And if you feel the need for Positive Vibrations and a sway to relaxing reggae, drop into Stary Klasztor. There, Bakshish, The Messengers, Ras Tab and Draggy will put us in a carefree, easy-going mood. It will be the ideal way to round off the day before the Finale in good spirits.
On 13 January, the day of the Grand Finale, we will be able to enjoy the best of Polish music on two stages: one at Stary Klasztor and the other in Nowy Targ Square. The monastery’s Gothic Hall will host Acid Drinkers, the group that changed the face of the Polish metal scene forever, joined by Alpha Dog, Wowa and Bemy. The outdoor stage in Nowy Targ Square will feature Strain, Nadija, Alicja Janosz, Chorzy, Tymon Tymański, one of the best-known Balkan brass bands, Fanfara Transilvania, and the special WROCLOVE GUITAR TOP project. Its line-up comprises Leszek Cichoński, Krzysztof Pełech, Jacek Krzaklewski, Maciej Mazurek, Maciej Burniak, Bartek Miarka and Marek “Stingu” Popow, who will help us launch the countdown to the 2019 Guitar Guinness World Record with some of the greatest guitar hits of all time.
As always, at 20:00 comes the highlight of every Grand Finale: Światełko do Nieba, the Light to the Sky. There will, of course, be no fireworks — WOŚP loves animals and cares about their welfare!
Beyond concerts, Nowy Targ offers numerous attractions. As usual, the Pancerni Strzegom re-enactment group and WOŚP volunteers from Wrocław’s 11 fundraising centres will appear. Volunteers from Muzeum Motoryzacji Topacz and Towarzystwo Automobilowe Topacz will display classic cars from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s and, weather permitting, historic firefighting equipment. The “Policz się z cukrzycą” Backwards Run will take place, with registration donations purchasing insulin pumps for pregnant women with diabetes.
At the Finale, you will meet sled dogs from Wataha Domowych Wilków, while Golden Retrievers and their owners collect donations for the sixth time. In the motorcycle zone, Arek Szajba, who won the 2018 World Championship for motorcycle building with his machine, will make it available for photographs. The Niepodległy dwarf will launch into space on a stratospheric balloon. Thanks to the racecourse, visitors can ride a pony or horse or have a photograph with Damar, ridden by Bohun in the film.
During the health-screening Sunday, you will be able to get tested for HCV and much more. The youngest participants in particular can look forward to numerous attractions, with plenty of surprises prepared by the organisers. There will also be the traditional Great Orchestra auctions, an ideal opportunity to support this exceptional initiative. As always, all WOŚP volunteers can count on hot tea with syrup. Everyone will also find food stalls, food trucks and hot-drink stands waiting for them.
The Orchestra's success belongs to everyone who wants to help, donating both on collection day, 13 January, and throughout the Foundation's year-round activities. Before every Finale, the tireless Jurek Owsiak utters his magic words: “Oh, there's going to be a lot happening!” This year, Wrocław will have the most happening of all!
