3-Majówka 2011 on Wyspa Słodowa: two days of rock, pop and reggae in Wrocław

3-majówka 2011 is almost here, and as usual we are co-organising it. The line-up prepared for this year’s May weekend represents the elite of Poland’s music scene.

LET’S ALL MEET ON WYSPA SŁODOWA!

There are recently popular artists and Polish rock classics alike. Across two days, everyone will find something, whether rock, pop, reggae or genre fusion. On 2 and 3 May, Słodowa Island welcomes Monika Brodka, whose latest album got Poland dancing. Energetic, humorous new songs and fresh arrangements of older favourites will certainly bring unforgettable musical experiences!

3-majówka could not be without Poland's leading Britpop band, Myslovitz. They are currently recording a new album scheduled for release at the end of May. The concert will certainly feature hits such as “Długość dźwięku samotności”, which audiences always sing with Artur Rojek, but let us hope for a taste of the new record too!

Alternative music fans will also find something to enjoy. The country's chief rebel, Grabaż, will appear at 3-majówka with Strachy na Lachy. In his lyrics, Krzysztof “Grabaż” Grabowski describes everyday reality in an original way, touching on irony and gallows humour.

Another undisputed highlight of the May holiday weekend, happysad, will get us dancing. The band have many devoted fans who follow their concerts across Poland, and crowds of dancing enthusiasts always gather in front of the stage. Songs such as “Łydka”, “Bakteryjna” and, more recently, “Made in China” ensure that happysad shows are always full and their audiences never stop dancing.

The classics cannot be absent either. Paweł Kukiz will appear with Piersi, hugely popular since ’84. They began setting socialist-realist poems to melodies, eventually developing sarcastic tales of Polish insecurities. Rock is also represented by Dezerter, Kazik Na Żywo and Hey: legendary bands still playing immortal rock or moving with the times, colouring the genre’s classics with electronics and remixes, as in Kasia Nosowska’s band.

Alongside legendary bands, Coma will also perform on the island. Classical influences, guitar riffs and, above all, Piotr Rogucki’s charismatic vocals have earned the group a place among Poland’s essential rock acts.

Fans of gentler sounds will also find something to enjoy, thanks to the ultimate classics, Dżem. They will present their familiar repertoire on the border between rock and blues. With singer Maciek Balcar, the band prove that blues remains popular and that we all know Rysiek Riedel's songs.

As every year, good Polish reggae is an essential presence on Wyspa Słodowa. This year's May festival line-up will include the past six months' musical discovery, Star Guard Muffin. Interest in their tour promoting “Szanuj” exceeded the organisers' wildest expectations. All Poland swayed to the band's songs and sang along with Kamil Bednarek.

Fisz, Emade – Tworzywo cannot be described by one genre. Their beginnings lie in hip-hop, but they draw on Black music, punk and jazz, adding contemporary instruments and synthetic electronic sounds. You simply have to hear it!

You cannot miss the musical energy coming to Wrocław’s Wyspa Słodowa on 2 and 3 May.
