Ward 21: Jamaican dancehall, production talents and roots in Waterhouse’s sound systems
Ward 21 combines Jamaican dancehall with the experience of producers, sound engineers and sound-system musicians from Waterhouse. The preview of the quartet’s first Polish appearance explored its beginnings alongside King Jammy and its original riddims.

The group’s origins date to 1998, when four creative, talented individuals, musicians, sound engineers, producers and sound-system operators, met in Waterhouse, Jamaica. Legendary producer King Jammy revealed their talent to the world, and Mark “Mean Dog” Henry, Andre Suku Grey, Ranaldo Rumblood Evans and Kunley McCarthy formed Ward 21. They took their name from the psychiatric ward of Kingston’s University Hospital. Since then, Ward 21 have conquered reggae with hits including Haters, Rhyme, No Apologies and Garrsion.
In 2003, Ward 21 released two warmly received albums, “Mentally Disturbed” and the contemporary-sounding “U Know How We Roll”, filled with modern dancehall production. Their artistic success enabled extensive touring across the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. In Japan, Shaggy himself invited them onstage. They have performed alongside stars including Black Uhuru, Yellowman and Gentleman. Ward 21 also run their own independent label and record songs of increasing lyrical and musical maturity.
Mark Mean Dog Henry, the oldest member of the line-up, always wanted to pursue a musical career. He grew up in Waterhouse, where dancehall sounds were part of everyday life, so fulfilling that dream was only a matter of time. He began as a selector for Bug Striker Sound System. Before joining Ward 21, however, he worked as a technical assistant to the world-famous Bounty Killer.
During his several years in the band, Andre Gray, also known as Suku, has made his mark as the creator of riddims such as Trilogy, Scarface, I-Rob, The Rock and Trifecta, and as a producer of tracks on three Sean Paul albums.
Ranaldo Rumblood Evans is said to have the strongest sense of humour in the Jamaican quartet. Despite being only 25, he already has considerable musical experience behind him.
Kunley McCarthy has turned his hand to many things. He has been a sound engineer for Road Sonic sound system and a member of Fab Five’s production team, among other roles. His deep baritone and exceptionally dynamic singing style were highly original when Ward 21 began their career. Many have since imitated his distinctive approach. Kunley is not only an experienced producer behind many of the group’s best riddims, but also a truly excellent lyricist.
