Tomasz Stańko New York Quartet: “Wisława” at Wrocław’s All Souls’ Jazz concerts
Tomasz Stańko New York Quartet revisits the music of “Wisława”, the album inspired by Szymborska’s poetry. The Wrocław Jazz All Souls preview at the White Stork Synagogue introduced another version of the quartet, with Ben Street on double bass.

After a beautiful concert this May, Tomasz Stańko returns to Wrocław for Zaduszki Jazzowe, bringing the music of “Wisława” in a second incarnation. This time, New York Quartet's double bassist will be Ben Street, a musician of extraordinary harmonic and rhythmic sensitivity.
Stańko likes to experiment with line-ups to give his music new dimensions. This is the line-up with which the trumpeter played at festivals in Vienna and Copenhagen. After the concert, the Danish weekly Politiken wrote: “The master trumpeter in a new guise delivers wild beauty”.

This is another encounter between Tomasz Stańko and Szymborska’s work. In 2009, the Kraków Opera also hosted one of the Nobel laureate’s final literary evenings, during which Stańko improvised to new poems read by the poet herself. Some inspired compositions on the album: Tutaj – Here, “Assassins” (Zamachowcy), Mikrokosmos and Metafizyka. Faces and A Shaggy Vandal, meanwhile, refer to the poem Myśli nawiedzające mnie na ruchliwych ulicach. The moving, ballad-like title track appears twice, opening and closing the album. It could just as easily have appeared on Stańko’s ECM debut and sits firmly within the most characteristic strand of his work.
Tomasz Stanko New York Quartet will perform with the following line-up:
Tomasz Stanko – trumpet
David Virelles – piano
Ben Street – bass
Gerald Cleaver – drums
