Mariza at Ethno Jazz Festival 2010: Portuguese fado and the voice of an artist born in Mozambique

Mariza brings a vocal and interpretative intensity to Portuguese fado that has drawn comparisons with Amália Rodrigues. The spring Ethno Jazz Festival 2010 preview introduced her Wrocław concert and the journey of an artist born in Mozambique.

Fado’s greatest star, a Portuguese national treasure and a performer in the world’s finest concert halls, will be a guest of the spring Ethno Jazz Festival 2010.

Her voice is described as “magical, diamond-like, magnetic”, while her phenomenal popularity is compared with the most famous opera divas and pop/rock megastars.

Mariza's name began inspiring worldwide admiration in 2001, when the Mozambique-born Portuguese singer received the prestigious BBC Radio 3 World Music award. Since then, enthusiastic opinions and comparisons with legendary Amalia Rodriguez, the symbol of fado, have continued unabated.

In her musical explorations, Mariza does not try to put fado in a museum. That is probably why she wins the favour of younger audiences.

Concert reviews often say that an artist charmed the audience. In Mariza's case, the terms are stronger: her concerts electrify, dazzle, inspire delight and even ecstasy! One thing is certain: her fame long ago spread beyond fado enthusiasts, and her Wrocław performance will be one of the most eagerly anticipated concerts in Poland in 2010.
