ADAM BAŁDYCH & LESZEK MOŻDŻER CONCERTS – PASSACAGLIA

Ethno Jazz Festival invites you to the White Stork Synagogue on 9 and 10 October for the premiere concerts of ADAM BAŁDYCH & LESZEK MOŻDŻER’s “Passacaglia”. They first played together at Wrocław Opera, improvising music to the silent “Skarb rodu Arne”. They waited over a decade to meet again. Perhaps Polish jazz’s two hottest exports, their collaboration unsurprisingly generated intense anticipation among audiences and festival organisers alike.

The artists work where improvised and classical music meet, patiently filling the moat dividing those worlds. Both thoroughly educated and technically excellent, they understand jazz’s idiom and consciously distil their own language from it, making it accessible. Rather than confining themselves to jazz’s underground ghettos, they enter open spaces fearlessly and open-mindedly, letting their instruments sound loudly and resonate widely.

“Passacaglia” is an electrifying album whose unrestrained musical dialogue captivates from the first notes. Exploring a contemporary language of sound filled with deeply personal means of expression, the artists have skilfully created a refined sonic marriage. It is highly communicative in character yet surprising in sound through a unique combination of instruments: an extremely rare Renaissance violin, two grand pianos tuned to 442 Hz and 432 Hz, and a prepared upright piano. This intimate, chamber-like format becomes a symphony of colours: passionate yet precise, full of captivating details and inventive solutions. The album comprises 14 pieces, ranging from entirely improvised impressions and joint compositions to unique, personal interpretations of themes by Eric Satie and Josquin des Pres.

Bałdych and Możdżer create their own distinctive world. It is a world of balanced beauty expressed through refined chamber music, but also through turbulent improvised dialogues brimming with intense emotion.

Their exchange of musical ideas exudes a mysterious, charismatic charm, filled with an elusive yet tangible confidence. Combined with delicacy and their already considerable experience, this allows a musical force of nature to unfold before our eyes, one that cannot be entirely fathomed or deciphered.
