The group use instruments including the igil, khomus (a Yakut jaw harp), doshpuluur (a long-necked wooden Tuvan lute), dünggür (a shamanic drum) and others. Huun-Huur-Tu literally means “sun propeller”, or, as the musicians write, “the vertical separation of rays of light that often appears just after sunrise or before sunset. For the members of Huun-Huur-Tu, the refraction of light that produces these rays seems analogous to the ‘refraction’ of sound that creates articulatory harmonics in Tuvan throat singing.”

Their work came to focus on reviving Tuvan song and musical heritage in its original form. In 1993, Huun-Huur-Tu made a legendary journey to the USA, where their music greatly impressed Frank Zappa and Kronos Quartet, among others, and they took part in their recordings. The group released their first album, “60 Horses in My Herd”, in 1993. Today, they have 14 albums to their name and numerous appearances on other artists’ recordings.
