DAGADANA WITH THE NATIONAL WIND ORCHESTRA ON THE PATH EACH OF US TAKES

Polish-Ukrainian group Dagadana were among the artists invited to WINDRAP! Orchestra, a project connecting the world of the wind orchestra with hip-hop and other selected musical styles. The band can be heard on two tracks: “Luksus”, presented a few months ago, and the new “Droga”, for which Dagadana's members wrote both lyrics and music.

“Droga” aims to encourage listeners to stand before a mirror

Known for boldly embracing musical challenges, Narodowa Orkiestra Dęta invited leading Polish hip-hop artists and others to collaborate last year on “WINDRAP! Orchestra”, an album blending different styles and approaches to making music. Released in April, it contains 10 compositions created by the orchestra under Mariusz Dziubek’s direction and guests including Liroy, Abradab and Grubson. Polish-Ukrainian group DAGADANA can be heard on the song “Droga”, among others.

“As the author of the song's first sketches, I tried to focus on creating an unusual harmony that evolves in an interesting way,” says DAGADANA's Mikołaj Pospieszalski. “It's an extraordinary experience to admire the final result, which develops a fairly simple arrangement into a dynamic, powerful-sounding song.”

Creating a piece in which the world of the orchestra combines with the band’s material is a complex, multi-stage process.

“I really liked Mikołaj’s sketch. I felt there was room for some interesting rhythmic play, so I suggested it to Daga and Mikołaj. They supported the idea, and that is how the chorus came about,” adds Dana. “Mikołaj created the sketch, I wrote the chorus, and Daga wrote the lyrics. We recorded a demo at home and sent it to the Maestro. We waited eagerly to hear how the song would sound in its orchestral version. When we could finally listen, we were delighted! We recorded the final vocals, and the song then went to our wonderful friend and outstanding sound engineer of the new generation, Mateusz Hulbój. And now, here is ‘Droga’.”

“Working with an orchestra always gives a song wings and a sense of grandeur,” says Daga. “For the remote recordings with Narodowa Orkiestra Dęta, I decided to try something new. In writing the lyrics, I wanted to describe the contemporary path we are all on. The strength that once came from being together as a family is gradually disappearing. Various divisions mean we meet less often at home for birthdays or name days. We have ‘similar dreams’, yet in waking life we become strangers to one another. To describe the rushing city, I decided to enter the world of rap as a means of expression that would make it easier to list the characteristics of parallel worlds hurtling in the same direction. ‘Droga’ is intended to encourage listeners to stand before a mirror and offer hope of reaching a meeting place.”

About ‘WINDRAP! Orchestra’

Lubin’s Narodowa Orkiestra Dęta has accustomed listeners to its successful interpretations of classical music, religious songs, familiar film themes and iconic pop, rock and reggae compositions. Some time ago, the ensemble led by Mariusz Dziubek set itself an unusual new challenge: a project with leading Polish hip-hop artists. This resulted in an album full of surprising musical combinations and guest appearances by Poland’s most interesting performers. Importantly for a venture of this kind, it consists entirely of new, previously unknown songs.

The Orchestra has collaborated with Poland’s finest rappers, producers and composers. Seven singles have already been released: “Znamy się tak krótko”, featuring jazz and pop singer Maria Sadowska, Polish hip-hop pioneer Liroy and genuine stage animals NO LOGO; “Malkontent” and “To co mam”, on which Abradab, Rahim and Kleszcz teamed up with NOD; “Luksus”, where the orchestra is joined by Polish-Ukrainian DAGADANA and Łona, one of the most interesting representatives of so-called intellectual rap; “Masz mnie za nic”, featuring Vienio, one of the Polish hip-hop scene’s best-known and most respected artists; “Pytania i wybory”, with rapping by Grubson, Abradab and Jarecki; and “Gdzieś w nas”, featuring Kasta.

LIONSTAGE is the executive producer of the WINDRAP! Orchestra album and project.
