Therion in Wrocław: heavy guitars, classical music and opera grown from death metal
Therion is a Swedish band founded in 1987 by Christofer Johnsson. They made their debut in 1991 with the death metal album Of Darkness…. Their subsequent work combines elements of classical music, including opera, with metal in its broadest sense. Since the release of Theli (1996), their music has been classified as symphonic metal with influences from heavy metal and progressive rock.
The band’s name was inspired by Celtic Frost’s album “To Mega Therion”. Their lyrics most often explore mythological themes. Most are now written by Thomas Karlsson, founder of Dragon Rouge, an organisation devoted to practising magic. Songs are written in English, Swedish, Russian, German, Akkadian, Latin, Hebrew, Egyptian, Ancient Greek and Enochian. The band changed its name twice: before 1988, it existed as Blitzkrieg, then as Megatherion.
