Tanghetto: Argentinian tango, live visuals and “Hybrid Tango II”

Tanghetto combines Argentine tango with electronics, carrying the bandoneon melody between acoustic instruments and samplers. The Ethno Jazz Festival concert preview at Stary Klasztor explored “Hybrid Tango II” and the visual side of the group’s performances.

Ethno Jazz Festival invites you to another wonderful evening of authentic tango rhythms straight from Argentina. On 5 October, in the Gothic Hall at Stary Klasztor, ul. Purkyniego 1, Buenos Aires group Tanghetto, one of the pioneers of tango-electronica fusion alongside Gotan Project and Bajofondo, will introduce audiences to the world of contemporary tango. Expect outstanding musicians playing live, excellent on-stage visuals and a unique opportunity to dance to authentic Argentinian music.

“The most seductive electrotango band,” writes the Los Angeles Times about them.

“A unique mixture of simplicity and sophistication […] emotion and strength born of an absence of prejudice,” La Nación (Buenos Aires). Twice Gardel Award winners, in 2009 and 2012, and three-time Latin Grammy nominees. Their latest album, HYBRID TANGO II, was nominated for a Latin Grammy for Best Tango Album. Every studio record released to date has earned Gold or Platinum status in Argentina. They have performed in over 150 cities in 25 countries across South America, North America, Europe and the Middle East.

Tanghetto have become important representatives of Argentinian music, performing for diverse audiences and sharing stages with Inti Illimani at Milan’s Latinoamericando World Festival, Gilberto Gil and Carlinhos Brown at Rio de Janeiro’s Contemporary Brazil Festival, receiving Latin Grammy nominations in the same category as talents such as Yo-Yo Ma, appearing with tango legends Sexteto Mayor in Medellín in 2011 and playing for enormous crowds at London’s River Thames Festival.

Tanghetto have undoubtedly taken neotango to new heights alongside pioneering the fusion of Buenos Aires music with electronic sounds. For over 12 years, they have represented contemporary tango’s latest trends while preserving its classical essence. They celebrated their tenth anniversary in Wrocław with 5 studio albums, all Gold or Platinum in Argentina, a live DVD, a double live album, soundtracks, three Gardel Music Award nominations and two wins (2009 and 2012), plus two Latin Grammy nominations to their name.

This time they return with their third Latin Grammy nomination, presenting the latest album, HYBRID TANGO II. They have performed in more than 25 countries and continue to surprise listeners with innovative studio recordings and extraordinary audiovisual shows incorporating dance.

Led by Max Masri, the youngest and last pupil of tango legend Virgilio Expósito, the band celebrated their tenth anniversary with the double album “VIVO”, comprising tracks recorded in 10 cities around the world over the past 5 years. Both parts of “VIVO” received separate Gardel Award nominations, and the “Milonguero” volume won Best Alternative Tango Album. It was the second statuette in the band’s history.

Tanghetto’s musical language is a fusion of sounds from different sources: tango, Latin rhythms and electronica. The bandoneon takes the singer’s role, accompanied by other acoustic instruments and a broad palette of synthesiser and sampler sounds. Both the name TANGHETTO, combining “tango” and “ghetto”, and the idea behind their first album, “Emigrante”, arise from experiences in the Little Argentinas, communities of Argentinians living abroad. “During many of our performances around the world, these emigrants come up and tell us how our music has mattered to them in different ways during difficult moments in their lives far from home. For us, that is always an enormous honour, beyond comparison,” says the band’s leader, Masri.
