Snowman and Michał Kowalonek at Stara Piwnica: post-rock, jazz and electronica in Wrocław

Singer Michał Kowalonek has left Myslovitz after six years and returns to concerts with his original band Snowman! They debuted on Poland's recording market in 2008 with Lazy, enthusiastically received by listeners and critics alike.

10 JANUARY 2019

Following an unforgettable launch concert at the Agnieszka Osiecka Studio, the band received a nomination for Polish Radio Three's prestigious Mateusze 2009 award. Many terms have been used to describe their music: post-rock, jazz, electronica, trance jazz, progressive rock, psychedelia, guitar-based alternative music or simply experimentation.

With their second album, “The Best Is Yet To Come”, Snowman revealed a new face: decidedly more song-based, melodic and dynamic. The musicians proved they could passionately explore new areas while continuing their creative search for fresh forms of expression. They presented new repertoire and a renewed musical form: energetic, bold and engaging!

Snowman returned in 2017 with “Gwiazdozbiór”, first released digitally on Tidal in studio Master Quality. It reached shops physically on 5 May. This time, the album is entirely Polish-language, collecting songs full of emotion, melody and authenticity. Cohesive compositions, a mature, energetic sound and intriguing lyrics are highlighted by leader Michał Kowalonek’s superb vocals.

“Gwiazdozbiór” was rated very highly by music journalists:

“Snowman and ‘Gwiazdozbiór’. One of the most original bands on the Polish scene in good form. There are plenty of lovely arrangements and gently unfolding themes that sound as though this album was written somewhere between three and five in the morning. Snowman's ‘Gwiazdozbiór’ is our album of the day,” Robert Sankowski / Gazeta Wyborcza

“Until recently, I associated the band mainly with their previous album’s unconventional length and a few interesting, almost trance-like experiments. Frontman Michał Kowalonek’s work with Myslovitz in the most difficult role, replacing Artur Rojek, now seems to be in the past, but it has left a clear imprint on their music through its melodiousness and concise songs. Add the musicians’ instrumental skill, charismatic vocals and Leszek Biolik’s very good production. Overall, this is one of those rare records where everything has worked, and definitely the finest of the band’s career. If you are going to draw on British models, this is how to do it!” – Piotr Metz / Wprost

“…Kowalonek clearly came to appreciate skilful song delivery, emotional expression and natural sensitivity — qualities that distinguished Rojek — and brought them to Snowman. Together with producer Leszek Biolik’s meticulous work, this resulted in a highly successful album. An album, let us add, full of hits: it is hard to imagine radio stations overlooking songs as catchy and memorable as ‘Znów jesteś sobą’, ‘Ocean nieba’ or ‘Moje miasto’.” Mirosław Pęczak / Polityka

“…On ‘Gwiazdozbiór’, the music is no longer progressive, psychedelic or jazzy, but remains incredibly astute, with a superb feel for musical substance. And finally, it is truly catchy. Under Leszek Biolik’s guidance, Snowman have recorded a brilliantly produced, carefully considered and self-aware album: smooth and radio-friendly on one hand, full of well-judged references to top-class international rock on the other. This makes it a contender for album of the year.” Jordan Babula / Teraz Rock

Snowman remains active and has just prepared a collection of remixes of songs from “Gwiazdozbiór”, entitled “Reworked & Remixed”.

As part of T.Cover., Snowman prepared the well-known T.love hit “Jest super”. In its new version, the song sounded atmospheric, modern and strikingly relevant. In this version, fans will also hear an incorporated passage from “Wychowanie”.
