Skalpel at Eter: Polish jazz of the sixties and seventies with electronics

The stars of Polish nu jazz return with a new album! Masters of combining Polish jazz of the 1960s and 1970s with modern electronica, Skalpel will perform in Wrocław after many years, on 24 October at Eter Klub.

Skalpel is a Wrocław duo comprising composers and producers Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudło, who have worked together since 1998.

In 2001, their outstanding Polish Jazz demo led to a partnership with the legendary British label Ninja Tune, where they released two warmly received albums.

The duo are known for drawing on Polish jazz of the 1960s and 1970s to build their own original vision of contemporary music, combining the best of jazz, hip-hop and club music. Their 2003 EP Sculpture offered a taste of their abilities. Gazeta Wyborcza named it one of the five most important records of new Polish jazz.

A year later, the duo released their debut album, Skalpel, admired by fans and critics worldwide. It featured in DJ Magazine's Album Of The Year round-up and was nominated for the BBC – Gilles Peterson Worldwide Music Awards 2004.

Skalpel’s second album, Konfusion (2005), was also a success, earning the duo the prestigious Polityka Passport. Their records rank highly in numerous lists of the past decade’s finest Polish albums. Fans waited 9 years for a new release. The “Simple” EP appeared in May this year, with “Transit” planned for October. Alongside the new recordings, Skalpel return to the stage. The format changes from their former audiovisual DJ sets to concerts featuring additional musicians.

Outstanding improvisers have joined the band's live line-up: keyboard player Joanna Duda and drummer Jan Emil Młynarski, also known as J=J. In this configuration, Skalpel will present new versions of tracks from all their albums. One could say that 24 October at Eter Klub will be Skalpel's first true concert in Wrocław.
