Sedaa at Ethno Jazz Festival: Mongolian throat singing combined with Iranian music

Sedaa brings Mongolian throat singing into dialogue with the musical traditions of Iran. The Ethno Jazz Festival announcement introduces the group through overtone techniques, morin khuur and dulcimer, combining the melancholy of strings with rhythmic movement.

Ethno Jazz Festival invites you on 27 April to a special concert by Sedaa, comprising musicians from Mongolia and Iran.

For admirers of Mongolian throat singing, made famous around the world by Huun Huur Tu, this is a rare chance to hear more masters of the genre in a concert enriched with distinctive Eastern sounds.

Sedaa means “voice” in Persian. The project combines traditional Mongolian and Eastern music with unique, fascinating results. It features wonderful musicians: Nasaa Nasanjargan and Naraa Nuranbataar on vocals and bowed strings, Mongolian hammered dulcimer virtuoso Ganzoring Davaakhuu, and Iranian multi-instrumentalist Omid Bahadori.

Their work reveals an exotic world somewhere between the East in its broadest sense and the Mongolian steppe. Their compositions are based on the acoustic sounds of varied folk instruments and traditional singing techniques maintained for centuries by Mongolian nomads, producing several tones simultaneously.

Low throat sounds (kargyraa) and astonishing harmonic overtone singing (khoomei), accompanied by melancholy morin khuur fiddle and a 120-string dulcimer, mix with pulsing Eastern rhythms, creating a unique mystical atmosphere.

Throat singing is known mainly through artists from the Republic of Tuva on the Russian-Mongolian border, where it developed into a unique art form.

Sedaa's musicians are true masters of the genre. Fans of Tuvan bands such as Huun Huur Tu, with their traditional approach, and Yat-Kha, combining tradition with rock, should note that Sedaa's music sits between these two groups.

Combined with Eastern rhythms, the result is music that is fierce, melancholy, colourful and spectacular.

The concert takes place at the recently opened Stary Klasztor music club, soon to become a new concert centre in our city. Its excellent location beside the Market Square, at ul. Purkyniego 1, and old Gothic interiors are sure to appeal to Wrocław audiences.
