Pustki at City Sounds in Łykend: analogue keyboards, guitars and original melodies

Pustki connect analogue keyboards, guitars and Basia Wrońska’s voice in the City Sounds concert announcement for Łykend. Delicate melodies move towards trance or guitar noise, while the band’s work also includes the poetic “Kalambury” and music written for theatre.

City Sounds recommends the concert promoting Pustki’s latest album, taking place on 29 March at the Łykend music club, Podwale 37.

Trance-like rhythms, analogue keyboards and guitars, all set in a delicate atmosphere that unexpectedly breaks into a roar. The band’s previous album, ‘Kalambury’, confirmed their talent for writing unpretentious hits.

“By exploring the poems of classical poets, Pustki achieves an extraordinary unity of words and music in every song” (Paweł Krawczyk, Machina).

The band are putting the finishing touches to their sixth album. Several months in the studio have yielded 10 compositions that signal considerable changes in their sound. Basia Wrońska’s vocals remain at the forefront, but the instrumental side introduces several new approaches. The fact that Pustki worked with three music producers on the album should be enough to spark curiosity. The band are experimenting while continuing to focus on what we have come to expect from them: strong melodies and meaningful lyrics.

Radek Łukasiewicz and Janek Piętka founded the group in 1999. Pustki have 5 albums to their name: “Studio Pustki” (2001), “8 Ohm” (2004), “Do Mi No” (2006), “Koniec kryzysu” (2008) and “Kalambury” (2009). Their tracks have appeared on numerous compilations. They composed music for three films: “Doskonałe popołudnie”, directed by Przemysław Wojcieszek; “Marco P. i złodzieje rowerów”, directed by Bodo Kox; and the silent “Aelita”, directed by Jakow Protazanow. They also recorded soundtracks for four theatre productions, including “Dwoje biednych Rumunów mówiących po polsku”, directed by P. Wojcieszek, written by D. Masłowska and staged at TR Warszawa.

Their theatre work also includes “Cokolwiek się zdarzy, kocham cię” (directed by P. Wojcieszek), “Osobisty Jezus” (directed by P. Wojcieszek) and “Predicatorum Gedanensis” (directed by Andrzej Gołębnik, with music for an outdoor production telling the history of Gdańsk). They created the musical accompaniment to P. Huelle’s novel “Ostatnia Wieczerza”, read on Polish Radio Three. In 2009, Pustki won the Grzegorz Ciechowski Artistic Award of the City of Toruń.
