Patricia Barber at Impart: Chicago jazz, piano and the American artist’s voice

Patricia Barber connects a low voice, piano and Chicago jazz in the Impart concert announcement. “Higher” develops the poetic side of her songs, with Larry Kohut’s bass and Jon Deitmyer’s drums creating a restrained setting for the singer’s interpretation.

Patricia Barber, the world-renowned American singer and pianist, will perform on 28 January in Impart's Theatre Hall at the invitation of Ethno Jazz Festival. The first lady of Chicago's jazz scene comes to Wrocław to promote her latest album, “Higher”.

Patricia Barber, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2019, is receiving enthusiastic reviews for her album released in March this year. Once again, she brings exciting musical material into jazz.

“Higher” presents the art-song cycle “Angels, Birds and I…”, blurring the boundaries between poetry, jazz and original songwriting, expanding jazz's harmonic language, and suitable for performance by jazz singers and instrumentalists as well as classical vocalists.
Patricia Barber's tour of the USA, Canada and Europe offers one of the few opportunities to hear her live.

Patricia Barber’s concerts feature atmospheric singing, a low vocal register, melancholy, lyricism and simple arrangements for most compositions.

Barber was born into a family with jazz traditions. Her father was a saxophonist in Glenn Miller's famous orchestra.
From the beginning of her career, Patricia Barber has recorded for Blue Note, the most important record label in jazz.

She will perform in Wrocław with her classic line-up:

Patricia Barber – vocals, piano
Larry Kohut – bass
Jon Deitemyer – drums

“As a pianist and singer, she is a force to be reckoned with. As a songwriter, she is utterly devastating.”
– Jazz Police

“»Higher« is a poetic jewel that far surpasses Barber's previous work. That is remarkable for an artist who has set herself such a high bar over the last three decades.”
– Eric De Boer, hifi-nl
