Nordic Festival in Edinburgh: Scandinavian art, When Saints Go Machine and Peter Morén
Edinburgh’s Nordic Festival introduces Scandinavian culture through concerts, art and a look at the North’s social traditions. The announced programme includes When Saints Go Machine with “Infinity Pool”, Peter Morén and Norwegian producer Lindstrøm.
First they arrived as marauding Vikings wanting to burn down your home; then they returned as giants wanting to furnish it. Scandinavian countries have long occupied a place in Scotland's consciousness, but this festival goes beyond the familiar and opens an intriguing space in which to discover their culture.
Scandinavia is renowned both for its distinctiveness and its rich social, political and cultural traditions. Nordic Festival offers answers to questions being asked by Scotland as a country at a constitutional crossroads, deciding its future in the 21st century. We invite you to discover the vibrant Nordic music and arts being celebrated in Edinburgh at the end of November.
MUSIC
With their new album “Infinity Pool”, described by The Guardian as “thoughtful, intricately constructed” and “often very beautiful”, Danish electro quartet When Saints Go Machine are sure to reach a wider audience. Through their unique alchemy, the band push musical boundaries and get people dancing immediately. They will give their only Scottish concert at Nordic Festival! (Liquid Rooms, 29 November).
Another exclusive festival concert will feature Swedish singer Peter Morén, performing in Scotland for the first time. Better known as Peter from Peter, Bjorn and John, whose 2006 “Young Folk” conquered the entire indie-rock world, his musical journey goes much deeper. He is a respected solo artist and founder of the Ingrid arts collective, thriving in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm. As a musician, he has worked with Lyke Li, Shout Out Louds and The Plan. His contribution to contemporary Scandinavian music is truly enormous. (Dram House, 29 November).
Peter’s appearance forms part of a special Modern Lovers concert at The Dam House on 29 November. Modern Lovers can safely be called an institution promoting club music, having conquered Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo in recent years. Resident Craig Jamieson and special guest Chris Geddes of Belle & Sebastian present northern European noise and Scandinavian underground highlights. This incredible musical battle takes place during the festival. (Dram House, 29 November)
Lindstrøm describes himself as Norway's next poster boy after Ibsen and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. With his bold, somewhat eccentric approach, he has brought a unique sensitivity to electronic music, weaving different forms and conventions into it. As a remixer, he has worked with Franz Ferdinand, Haim, Killers, Roxy Music, Doves, Bordoms, The Horrors and LCD Soundsystem.
Nordic Festival is honoured to present this exceptional artist at his only concert in Scotland. Alongside Lindstrøm, the stage will feature DJ Mighty Mouse, resident of the acclaimed Nightfilm club, with his guests. (Cabaret Voltaire, 30 November)
VISUAL ART
Artist Sasha Huber will present her exhibition “Louis Agassiz (1807–2013): Visitation”, exploring historical injustices through visual reinterpretations of theories about race and ancestry discredited at the turn of the century. As a politically engaged artist, Huber asks whether these prejudices can be confined to the past. The exhibition will take place at Summerhall from 11 October to 22 November.
Held Og Hasard (Luck and Chance) is a unique opportunity to see work by COBRA, a group whose creations continue to surprise the world. Its members include Danish artist Asger Jorn, a founder of both COBRA and the Situationist International. The exhibition will feature documents, artists’ books, magazines and small works by the group. As with Sasha Huber, their work can be seen at Summerhall from 11 October to 22 November.
