Nneka in Wrocław: Nigerian roots, soulful vocals and “Soul Is Heavy”

Nneka weaves soulful singing, rhymes and African motifs together, drawing on life between Nigeria and Germany. The Wrocław concert preview explored her musical journey from “Victim of Truth” to “Soul Is Heavy”.

Nneka is a Black soul singer and poet. Like Ayo, she has African roots, having been born in Nigeria, but lives permanently in Germany. Britain's Sunday Times described her debut, Victim Of Truth (2005), as being as good as Lauryn Hill's The Misseducation Of.

Like Lauryn Hill in her Fugees days, Nneka weaves warm soul vocalisations and African musical motifs into her rhymes. She is now one of Europe's most important and best-known soul artists, leaving her ‘competitors’ far behind with her ability to write beautiful melodies and create vocal harmonies.

The sound of her second album, No Longer At Ease (2008), was inspired by artists such as Gnarls Barkley, Sean Paul and Bilal. Her latest album, Concrete Jungle, was released in February 2010. It was also Nneka's first album to appear in the United States, where it received very good reviews. The album yielded singles including ‘Walking’ and ‘God of Mercy’.

The Nigerian singer first visited Poland in April 2009. Every concert sold out. Now she will play again in Kraków, Wrocław and Warsaw. Her wonderful performances won the affection of Polish audiences. Her unique style is sure to delight fans of Erykah Badu, Ayo, Lauryn Hill and Morcheeba's Skye!

Nneka's new studio album Soul Is Heavy is currently scheduled for 26 September, promoted by ‘My Home’. Details are not yet known, but several internationally renowned guests will be heard.
