Mísia with “Senhora da Noite”: traditional fado and women poets’ lyrics at Ethno Jazz Festival

On “Senhora da Noite”, Mísia gives voice to Portuguese women writers and returns to traditional fado. The Ethno Jazz Festival concert announcement introduces an album whose poetry is accompanied by guitars, accordion, piano and violin.

The artist will perform in Wrocław on 15 February 2013 as part of Ethno Jazz Festival, in a concert promoting her latest album, “Senhora da Noite”. This concert marks a major return to traditional fado, Mísia's most emotional side.

After 20 years of a musical career begun with the simply titled debut “Mísia” (EMI, 1991), and a decade after her last traditional fado album, “Ritual” (Erato, 2001), Senhora da Noite seems an obvious and important step in Mísia's artistic career.

The album's concept combines traditional fado music with lyrics written exclusively by women: poets and writers including Helia Correia, Lidia Jorge and Florbela Espanca; fellow singers such as Amélia Muge and Adriana Calcanhotto; and fado legends including the great Amalia Rodrigues, Aldina Duarte and Mísia herself.

The album owes its atmosphere to Mísia's unique style. Alongside a fado guitar trio, she is accompanied by accordion, violin and piano, instruments heard on several albums since “Garras dos Sentidos” (Erato/Warner Music Classic, 1998).

This is the first artistic project in the history of fado in which women play a more significant role than tradition assigns them. They are not only muses and performers but creative authors too. As with all her previous releases, most of the album’s lyrics were written specifically for Mísia’s voice. The repertoire also includes works by female writers who are no longer alive.
