THE NEW ALBUM ‘SHADOW’

14 March 2024

LIZZ WRIGHT — her unique voice, described by The New York Times as “a smooth, dark alto with qualities you might associate with barrel-aged bourbon or buttery-soft leather”, has become her means of crossing social divisions, conveying love and a profound sense of humanity.

Wright draws inspiration from her upbringing in Georgia in the American South. She was musical director of a small church where her father was pastor. Gospel music and call-and-response singing with the congregation began her relationship with music. Before long, she was exploring the Great American Songbook on her way to a remarkable singing career.

At the age of 22, Wright became nationally known as a singer through her concert tribute to Billie Holiday, where her graceful performance won the audience’s hearts. A year later, she signed with Verve Records to release “Salt”, which topped Billboard’s contemporary jazz chart. Her subsequent albums continued to reach high chart positions, and her single “Lean In”, from “Freedom & Surrender”, featured on President Obama’s 2016 Summer Playlist.

June 2022 brought Holding Space, a brilliant live album recorded at a Berlin concert. 2024 heralds the release of her latest album, “Shadow”, exploring love, loss, community and healing. The songs were created in the company of artists including Angelique Kidjo and Meshell Ndegeocello.
