Joan as Police Woman in Wrocław: Joan Wasser’s soul and the “Interpretation Domination” tour

A concert by this group is essential for lovers of sophisticated sounds, occasionally seasoned with a touch of rock.

Joan Wasser founded American trio Joan As Police Woman. A Boston University graduate who studied violin, she combined university-orchestra duties with broadening her horizons in ambitious alternative projects. She is no anonymous newcomer: listeners may know her recordings and performances with Scissor Sisters, Sheryl Crow, Rufus Wainwright, Dave Gahan, Anthony & The Johnsons and Lou Reed.

Her own Joan as Police Woman project began in 2002. Alongside Wasser, its core consists of Ben Perowsky, a drummer who works with John Zorn and Roy Ayers, and lyricist, bassist and graphic artist Rainy Orteca, associated with Antony and the Johnsons and White Magic.

2006 brought a breakthrough for Joan Wasser’s trio. They signed with independent British label Reveal to release their debut, “Real Life”. This deeply lyrical album, brimming with femininity, soon brought Joan As Police Woman international fame and recognition from audiences and critics alike. Less than two years later came “To Survive”. Compositions recorded with Rufus Wainwright and David Sylvian, among others, consolidated Joan As Police Woman’s musical position.

Joan As Police Woman will come to Wrocław with Joan Wasser on vocals, guitar and piano, Tyler Wood on bass guitar and keyboards, and Parker Kindred on drums. This will be the band’s only Polish appearance on the European “Interpretation Domination” tour, featuring previously unreleased interpretations of Joan Wasser’s favourite compositions by artists as diverse as Nina Simone, David Bowie, Public Enemy, Sonic Youth, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix.
