Jamie Woon at Eter for City Sounds: “Mirrorwriting”, soulful vocals and electronics

Jamie Woon and “Mirrorwriting” feature in the City Sounds announcement for Eter, connecting soulful singing and electronics. Gospel, guitar grooves and influences from Burial shape his approach to R&B, in which the voice also serves as an instrument.

A graduate of the prestigious BRIT School and one of Britain's most promising new artists, Jamie Woon is the next City Sounds star. The creator of hits including “Lady Luck” and “Wayfaring Stranger”, recorded with Burial, will perform at Wrocław's Eter on 25 March!

He is 28, has an incredible voice and writes excellent songs, as his debut “Mirrorwriting” proves. He is also outstanding live, confirmed by his Katowice concert broadcast live on Polish Radio Three.

Jamie Woon’s music appeals both to fans of avant-garde ideas and lovers of perfectly produced pop. Moving freely between classic gospel and dubstep techniques learnt from Burial, he creates music ideally suited to listeners tired of indistinguishable R&B singers and radical electronics. Preserving a soulful sensitivity and expression recalling Aloe Blacc and James Black, this Chinese-Scottish singer frames his music in thoroughly contemporary, broken electronic rhythms associated more with WARP releases than Northern Soul.

The greatest strength of all Woon's compositions is his unique, extraordinarily magnetic voice. The British musician inherited his singing talent from his mother, an artist associated with Celtic music, then honed it at the London School for Performing Arts & Technology, where Amy Winehouse was a schoolmate.

The artist describes his music as R&B built on a guitar groove, using electronics and his own voice both for singing and as an additional instrument.
