Chłopcy Kontra Basia with “Oj tak!”: Polish folklore, jazz and soul in the Folkowe Granie series

Chłopcy Kontra Basia finds its own language between Polish folk traditions, jazz and soul. The Folkowe Granie concert announcement introduces “Oj tak!” and a trio in which Barbara Derlak’s voice meets clarinet, jaw harp, double bass and drums.

Ethno Jazz Festival invites you to another concert by the excellent ethno-jazz trio Chłopcy Kontra Basia. On 20 November at Wrocław's Łykend music club, as part of the Folkowe Granie series, the band will promote their debut album, “Oj tak!”

Chłopcy Kontra Basia is an unusual project combining folk music with jazz and soul. The band is led by the remarkable Barbara Derlak, who writes lyrics, sings and plays clarinet and Jew's harp. Joining her on stage will be double bassist Marcin Nenko and drummer Tomasz Waldowski.

The band take Polish folklore as their starting point, then arrange it in their own way. Since the line-up contains no harmonic instrument such as guitar or piano, the result lies on the border between jazz and contemporary folk music. The band recently appeared in the qualifying rounds of Must be the Music and progressed to the programme's later stages.

Chłopcy Kontra Basia won awards at Mikołajki Folkowe 2011 and in World Music Network’s “Battle of Bands” poll for the best world music track.

Band line-up:

Barbara Derlak – vocals, clarinet, bass clarinet, jaw harp

Marcin Nenko – double bass

Tomasz Waldowski – drums, fujara
