Matisyahu in Wrocław: reggae, a distinctive voice and the hit “King Without a Crown”

Matisyahu connects reggae with hip-hop, rock and Jewish folk traditions in the musical story presented by the Wrocław announcement. Alongside “King Without a Crown”, “Spark Seeker” marks an important chapter, expanding his language through a pronounced electronic element.

Matisyahu returns to Poland! One of reggae’s most intriguing, charismatic singers, astonishing the world with musical intelligence for over 10 years, performs at Eter on 27 August and will conquer Wrocław again. His music is a fascinating tangle of hip-hop, rock, dancehall, roots reggae and, above all, Jewish folklore. His Hasidic name means “gift from God”, and for fans his work is indeed the finest present.

Born Matthew Paul Miller into an American Jewish family 36 years ago, he changed his name and identity at 19, entering the Hasidic world. The rebellious, rap-loving teenager became a self-aware, deeply religious man, finding his path in prayer and reggae. His 2004 debut, “Shake Off The Dust… Arise”, features one of his most popular singles, “King Without A Crown”.

The world went wild for the sight of a young, bearded Hasid in his ever-present hat or kippah, spreading positive energy at concerts to rival the Jamaican masters. Matisyahu’s subsequent albums, “Youth” (2006) and “Light” (2009), received fantastic reviews. He began collaborating with artists from around the world, including avant-garde jazz legend Bill Laswell. In 2006, Billboard magazine named him the world’s best reggae artist. His dazzling career did not go to his head.

He gradually enriched his music with new elements: clear electronic influences emerged on the 2012 album “Spark Seeker”. He also changed his image, removing his beard and kippah as a sign of spiritual renewal, and dyeing his hair. Released two years later, “Akeda” proved that despite this physical transformation, the artist remained true to himself and his message of peace had lost none of its power.

Listening to Matisyahu’s records is an incredible experience, but his music can only be experienced fully in concert. Every show is a journey, with Matisyahu guiding fans along a path to musical fulfilment. It is a spiritual and physical experience, because sitting still during his performances is impossible. Passionate music, a red-hot dance floor, dancing, joy and a soul filled with a message of peace await everyone who comes to Eter!
